IStructE Centenary 1908 - 2008

Celebrating 100 years of structural engineering

Structure is everywhere - just look around you. We all live and work in a world defined by structures. Think of London and you think of the London Eye; picture Paris and you picture the Eiffel Tower; imagine New York and you imagine the Statue of Liberty. From these iconic structures to the everyday ones you pass on your way to work or play, that they even exist is all down to the efforts and expertise of structural engineers. But how many of us really appreciate their work, and the art and science of structural engineering?

Running from October 2007 to December 2008, IStructE's Centenary is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the vital contribution of structural engineers to society in their role in ensuring structures are safe, good value and creative in design.

Stimulating activities and events will take place throughout the Centenary session that will present structural engineering to the public in an accessible and engaging way. These will include a Centenary Conference and a display at the Victoria and Albert Museum. There will also be regional events taking place all over the world, organised by IStructE's local branches, making this perhaps the largest coordinated drive to raise the profile of the structural engineering profession that has ever taken place.

IStructE has also commissioned artist Stephen Wiltshire to design a special panorama for the Centenary featuring iconic structures from around the world. This will feature on a range of merchandise including calendars, mugs and mousemats, which will be available from October 2007.

IStructE's Centenary activities and events are all aimed at reminding you as you go about your day, that the more you understand about structures and structural engineering, the more you understand about your world.
