The paper discusses the structural survey, appraisal, and rehabilitation of a superb example of Victorian engineering architecture. It describes the phasing of a very extensive survey of one of the earliest framed structures and gives details of surveying such structural elements as cast-iron columns, beams, masonry jack-arch floors, timber piles, etc. The purpose of thesurvey was to establish the viability of refurbishment. Despite age, hard usage, neglect, bomb damage, and vandalisation, the survey found this robust structure was basically structurally healthy but badly needed
attention. Details of remedial measures are given and the proven success, of a trial run is described.
