IStructE has a dual role and twin aims; those of a learned society and as a qualifying body for the profession. Its aims are 'to promote the science and art of structural engineering and the achievement of excellence in construction, and to further the education and competence of its members.'
Whether you are a budding or practicing structural engineer, there are several good reasons for joining the Institution. To begin with, membership is a public acknowledgment of your education, qualifications and experience. On top of that, you gain access to a lifetime’s programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to further your career and you become part of an international network of professionals. At the same time, you are given the opportunity to play your part in expanding the boundaries of structural engineering science, art and practice. All in all, membership of the Institution is your key to the exciting world of structural engineering.
The earlier you join the Institution in your career, the sooner you can enjoy the full services. These will help give you the support essential to achieving the Institution’s core training objectives and the right experience during your Initial Professional Development (IPD) leading towards the professional exams.
As a member, you will have full access to the excellent facilities of the Institution’s library, with its 30000+ records on various aspects of structural engineering. The unique collection includes textbooks from the 1800s, reports, UK and US standards/codes, over 150 journal titles, and an expanding range of audiovisual materials.
The Institution produces a number of publications. The Structural Engineer, published twice monthly, is sent to all members of the Institution and to some 700 other subscribers, such as libraries, universities, research bodies and companies. The magazine carries a wide range of technical papers and provides members with worldwide information on professional and technical activities, headquarters, branch, division, section and group events. It also acts as a medium for the exchange of views by members, as well as for relevant advertising. Other material includes technical publications and reports which are available to members at a reduced price.
As part of its role as a learned society, the Institution holds regular meetings, courses, seminars and conferences. These provide networking opportunities and help members and other professionals update their knowledge and understanding. Twice a month there are evening meetings, open to all members free of charge; members are also entitled to a discount on other seminars, courses, etc. In addition, local branches and divisions arrange their own programmes of meetings and social events, including training courses and site visits. Finally, the Institution supports informal study groups where those interested in particular topics can meet to debate topical engineering issues. For young engineers especially, the local branches and divisions provide an excellent opportunity to get to know local engineers, engineering firms and prospective employers.
Candidates are encouraged to qualify as early as possible in their careers. To achieve this, the Institution:
- specifies the standards of academic qualification and IPD that
candidates must attain for each class of membership
- Holds its own Professional Review Interviews for those wishing to enter the profession as Chartered members, Associate-Members and Technician Members.
- holds its own exams for those wishing to enter the profession as
Chartered Structural Engineers and Associate-Members
- fosters the exchange of ideas and information
- defines exacting standards of professional responsibility, ethics and
conduct
- helps members solve problems in design and construction through
the publication of technical reports and information
- contributes to guidance notes and Codes of Practice that play a
significant part in the everyday work of structural engineers
- monitors relevant legislation.
