The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

The temple of Artemis, which would have been located on the east coast of modern day Turkey on the banks of the river Ephesus, was reconstructed many times over the centuries. The first temple stood there nearly 3,000 years ago, in 800BC. These reconstructions were due to both natural disasters, such as earthquakes, and the reoccurring destructiveness of man. Each iteration of the temple became larger and grander than the last, until, in 350BC, the final version was constructed.

This temple was the first structure to be built entirely of marble and it was even larger than its far more famous rival, the Pantheon in Greece. The temple was 130 metres (425 feet) long and 69 metres (225 feet) wide. There were 127 columns supporting the roof, each of which was 18 metres (60 feet) in height.

Throughout its history the temple was always dedicated to the Ephesus Goddess Artmeis - the Goddess of fertility
