Philosophy of Structural Design

This Task Group has been set up to update the following four Institution reports:

• Communication of structural design (1975)
• Aims of structural design (1987)
• Stability of buildings (1988)
• The achievement of structural adequacy in buildings (1990)

Since these reports were first published much has changed in the world and our industry. We all now have a more global view, information technology has changed in ways unforeseen when the documents were first conceived and climate change is affecting us all.

It is likely that the 1975 and 1987 publications will be merged to form Philosophy and communication of structural design while the other two titles will be merged to form Achievement of structural adequacy. It is anticipated that the revised documents will be published in late 2010.
